Xanthos was the key city of the Lycian world and its greatest center for most of the Lycian history. It was discovered by the British explorer Charles Fellows. Findings date back to the 8th century BC, but possible that the place may have existed in the Bronze Ages or even earlier, Iron Age
The neighbouring antique city Letoon is very close, it was administered by Xanthos.
Letoon was the sacred cult center of Lycia, located less than 10 km to the south of Xanthos. Both cities boast as the most remarkable archaeological sites, and so registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
